Another great day at the new Bungsamran. With the assistance of a friend who has fished Bungsamran a lot and recommended using light tackle I set up a PE6 rod with a large fixed spool reel and 35lb monofilament. I started with a Mekong on the scales at 38kg, followed by another on the scales at 35.5kg. I then got dragged most of the length of the pier by an even bigger Mekong, unfortunately we were nowhere near the scales when we hauled it out but I’m guessing it was somewhere around 45kg. I followed these with two more Mekongs over 30kg and two more in the low 20kg range. Sometime after the 5th Mekong I landed a Siamese carp which weighed in at 12.5kg. The way to catch at Bungsamran at the moment seems to be lighter gear and longer rods to enable longer casts, long mono hook links, feeder set deep and casting towards the middle of the lake. There were no close in fights like at old Bungsamran, all the fish headed out towards deep water. Do not leave your tackle or bags unattended. I saw a couple of locals trying the locks on several of the nets chained up on the pier.
