Another great day at the new Bungsamran

Another great day at the new Bungsamran. With the assistance of a friend who has fished Bungsamran a lot and recommended using light tackle I set up a PE6 rod with a large fixed spool reel and 35lb monofilament. I started with a Mekong on the scales at 38kg, followed by another on the scales at 35.5kg. I then got dragged most of the length of the pier by an even bigger Mekong, unfortunately we were nowhere near the scales when we hauled it out but I’m guessing it was somewhere around 45kg. I followed these with two more Mekongs over 30kg and two more in the low 20kg range. Sometime after the 5th Mekong I landed a Siamese carp which weighed in at 12.5kg. The way to catch at Bungsamran at the moment seems to be lighter gear and longer rods to enable longer casts, long mono hook links, feeder set deep and casting towards the middle of the lake. There were no close in fights like at old Bungsamran, all the fish headed out towards deep water. Do not leave your tackle or bags unattended. I saw a couple of locals trying the locks on several of the nets chained up on the pier.

My first day at the new Bungsamran fishing park. As there were no bread skins I started off using rice husks. First fish landed was a Mekong giant catfish of around 22kg. I landed 5 more Mekongs all above 20kg, the largest around 28kg (62 lb). Late afternoon I switched to breadcrumbs and landed three small Siamese carp, the largest weighed in at 4.3kg. I also caught two rohu, the largest tipped the scales at 3.5kg. The rohu and Siamese carp would have been great fun on light tackle but I was tooled up for Mekongs so they were very easily reeled in. A friend caught a 14kg Amazon red tail catfish which put up a good scrap despite being caught on some very strong tackle. A promising start for the new Bungsamran.

Bungsamran 20th May

The morning started very slowly. I caught the first fish after about 3 hours, a tilapia of less than 1kg. Then came a Mekong of around 22kg and a striped catfish of around 7kg. Mid afternoon the fishing got a bit faster with three more Mekongs in the 20kg to 25kg range. One was hooked in the tail, it looks like this fish used its tail a lot to break up bait balls as it had been hooked three times previously in the tail. Just before 9pm I hooked the last fish of the day, a nice fat Mekong of around 25kg. All the Mekongs put up a great fight really testing my fishing tackle.

A good day at Bungsamran

Not many fish caught but a good day at Bungsamran. On my first cast I hooked a Siamese Giant Carp, after a fairly brief fight, it was hauled out onto the pier, it tipped the scales at 26.6kg. A few casts later I landed a Mekong giant catfish of around 40kg. I lost the next two fish by pulling the hook from one and snapping off on the other. I subsequently landed three more Mekongs, the first two estimated at 25kg and 23kg, the last on the scales at 29.1kg.
